A Tour Through The May Garden | angiethefreckeldrose.com

The days are getting longer here, and it’s finally starting to warm up. The plants are all thrilled! They are soaking up the sunshine and absolutely loving the heat. The spring chives are in bloom, and the tomatoes are gaining in size. Things really take off at this time of year, and I am loving it!

In this particular bed, I have Sun Gold cherry tomatoes on the left and Mountain Merit slicer tomatoes over to the right. I tried to choose all disease resistant varieties for my garden this year as I mentioned in my previous post. I’m very excited to see how they do!

I gave myself the goal of growing every plant I could by seed, and I’m very proud of all the work I’ve put into the garden so far. The only summer vegetable left on my list to start is beans. I’ll be direct sowing those this weekend! Speaking of direct sow, the peas I direct sowed back on St. Patrick’s Day are doing amazing.

Climbing up the front of my Titan Pea Tunnel are Sugar Magnolia and Magnolia Blossom peas. Climbing up the back are Sugar Daddy and Little Crunch peas. Little Crunch is a really fun container friendly variety from Renee’s Garden that grow up to 2 1/2 feet tall and are perfect for small spaces. I’m hoping they start to form blooms over the next couple of weeks.

Another veggie that is just starting to form berries/blooms is my Strawberry spinach! I love going around and snacking on the bright red berries these plants produce. You can also eat the leaves just like regular spinach. These plants have reseeded themselves since 2019!

I’ve also added some bright and cheery looking annuals that include daisies, sunflowers and calendula to my container gardens for some extra color. I have some early blooming zinnias, but am still waiting on most of the other flowering annuals like California poppies, cosmos and cornflowers. Hopefully, those will start flowering by June!

Most of the herbs I have are from years past like my apple mint, English thyme and oregano. I do add in pineapple sage along with African basil each year. I found the pineapple sage, but no luck on the African basil yet!

I had a bunch of perennial flowers and herbs blooming, so I decided to make a floral arrangement as a tribute to a very special animal we loved. I really love how it turned out! The shrubs are blooming like crazy right now. This includes the spirea, azalea and rhododendron. Everything looks so colorful! I added some of the spirea blooms into the bouquet!

I’m so excited to see, smell and eat all the garden goodies that will be arriving over the next couple of months. I’ll make sure too keep you all updated here. I also have a fun announcement to share with you all!
